Teaching Philosophy

Classical music is the bedrock of my curriculum. As students learn from and bring alive this great repertoire, they gain musicianship skills, stylistic awareness of musical eras, theory, and technique. That knowledge provides an invaluable foundation for musical endeavors of any kind.

Though I hold all my students to an equally high degree of excellence with standard benchmarks and goals, my approach is not one-size-fits-all. The wealth of keyboard music accumulated over more than five centuries offers countless pedagogical methods, as well as concert repertoire that varies in difficulty. From this collective body of work, I select courses of study unique to each student’s needs. This makes mastering essential milestones rewarding and enjoyable.

To balance the mostly solitary nature of lessons and practice, my students participate in studio classes and collaborative work. In these group settings they inspire and learn from each other, discovering different repertoire and varied approaches to playing. Competitions and performances through local and national organizations provide additional opportunities for growth and a broader view of the music world.

I create a teaching environment that fosters curiosity, problem solving, interpretation, introspection, creativity, and expression. My ultimate goal is to make studying piano enriching and meaningful. Above all, I believe in experiencing joy that comes from being able to play good music, and the satisfaction that comes from accomplishments won through consistency and perseverance.
